Grandparents

Marteene Diaz is a producer and filmmaker who lives in Colorado Springs with her wife, their daughter Kaya, and Gracie. In this clip she looks at how family childcare has changed over the generations. Both of her grandmothers stayed home their whole lives. Today, though, many grandparents can't step in the same way. That's not because they don't want to. It's because they're still working to support themselves and are still trying to retire.

Her parents are divorced, so on her side of the family Kaya has four grandparents, and all four still work full time. She says that's common among her friends and peers too. She blames rising living costs and changes in society, and jokes that if anyone has a "well-off, free at-home grandparent" to spare, she'd love one.
