A Head Start Home
Take a tour with Deborah Harvin, a family child care provider in Colorado Springs who runs a Head Start program out of her own home. She explains that providers can set up child care across the whole house or in one set-aside space, and that the Home Network gives them a way to become a Head Start home.
Deborah walks through each learning area she has set up: a baby area, a quiet corner, a writing and art center, a science center, and a manipulatives station. There's also a puzzle table, because "Miss D" believes puzzles teach you everything you need to know. The tour ends with the library, cubbies, dramatic play area, and block area.
She points out that children walk into a home, not "some big scary place." They start upstairs in her living space, then come downstairs, where "now you're at school." Deborah closes by describing what makes the work rewarding: opening your home and your heart to children, and watching them learn every day.
